The Plovdiv Medical University, also known as VMI (meaning Higher Medical Institute), was established in 1945 in Plovdiv,Bulgaria.It includes the Faculties of Medicine, Dental medicine, and Health Care, a Medical College and a hospital of its own with a capacity of 2000 beds. All departments, considered as indispensable for higher medical education according to modern standards, are available – plovdiv_mu_outsidetheoretical, pre-clinical and clinical, as well as laboratories, clinics and other units with modern equipment for diagnostics and treatment, research activities and training of medical and dental students. The Central University Library offers the students more than 170 000 volumes in field of medicine in many languages as well as an Internet hall and a local net system (with Medline and Micromedex available). The Medical University issues its own journal called Folia Medica, which is exchanged with more than 326 specialists from over 54 countries included in Medline. Every year over 3800 Bulgarian and foreign students are trained at the Medical University – Plovdiv.

Foreign citizens applying to Medical University – Plovdiv must present the documents listed below:

1. Application form including brief personal data, educational background and the courses which they are applying for.

2. Diploma (a copy) of completed secondary (high) school education and an academic transcript indicating the disciplines studied and the grades received. The applicants should have taken Biology and Chemistry courses with an average score of not less than 62% of the maximum one based on the grading system in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended.

3. Document (original) issued by a competent authority, certifying the applicant’s right to apply and continue their education in higher schools/universities in the country of origin of the secondary (high) school they have attended.

4. Health certificate (original) issued not earlier than one month prior to application and verified in the country from which the candidate is applying.

5. Document (a copy) certifying the citizenship or two documents certifying the citizenship – for the candidates with dual citizenship, one of which is Bulgarian.

6. 4 recent photos – 4/5 cm

The documents listed above (p. 2, 3, 4) must be legalized (Apostille-affixed), translated in Bulgarian and verified according to the official state procedures.

The documents (original plus two photocopies for non-EU citizens) should be submitted to the Foreign Student Admission Office of Medical University – Plovdiv by the applicants in person or by their representatives to be considered for admission.

The deadline for submitting documents is 31 August for EU-citizens and 30 June for non-EU citizens.

Foreign students may apply for training in:

– Bulgarian language course (all specialties) – in case they pass one-year Bulgarian language preparatory course;

– English language course (Medicine, Dental Medicine and Pharmacy) with parallel Bulgarian language course during the first two years. Before being admitted non-native English speakers must prove their English language proficiency at least at B1 level by holding a diagnostic test за the University
or pass one-year English language reparatory course.


Non-EU citizens who would like to reside for study at the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria must have visas type D. The certificates required by the Bulgarian Embassies when applying for visa are issued by the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science to the applicants approved for study. Non-EU citizens submit their application documents not later than 30 June in order their visa formalities to be settled before the beginning of the academic year.


Health insurance is obligatory for all non-EU citizens. The health insurance is necessary also for visa issuing. All EU-citizens must have EHIC cards that should be updated every year.


The annual tuition fee of does not include accommodation, health insurance, textbooks and educational handbooks which are at the student’s own expense.
